We were asked for help with cleaning slate tiles in Roydon, Essex. The stone restoration was part of a larger restoration project. Sometimes it feels almost inevitable that your floors take a hit during any kind of building work. Even when they are covered, they are likely to suffer from some damage during the process.
Slate tiles are wonderfully characterful. As a natural stone, their layers offer a beautiful look that cannot be rivalled by many other stone floors. This means that restoring slate tiles does demand an understanding of their intricacies. You cannot machine polish slate tiles due to their make-up.
Not only do the tiles look like they have changed colour, but they are left well protected against further wear. It is important to protect and treat your stone floor. It is almost like conditioning your floor so that you get the most from it. The tiles are left well-protected and lustrous.
Cleaning Slate Tiles – Routine Cleaning
Routing cleaning is important once the restoration process has taken place. Although your tiles will look great, it is important to start a routine cleaning process that will ensure they remain looking that way.
You can mop your slate tiles with a gentle cleanser. It is important to use a cleaning product that is specifically made for natural stone or (better still) slate tiles. Make sure that you do not use any products containing vinegar or lemon. This will damage the surface of your tiles. It is preferable to use a cleaning product that is pH neutral. Once you have completed the cleaning process, all solution should be rinsed away. You can leave the tiles to dry naturally, or you can use a soft cloth to help the process.
Using acidic or abrasive cleaning products will cause a chemical reaction that can etch your slate stone floor. Furthermore, it can strip the sealer. It is suggested never to use these products even when completing spot-cleaning.
